چکیده

A striped inductor and its utilization of a voltagecontrolled oscillator (VCO) are studied with the aim of suppressing phase noise degradation in Kand Ka-bands. The proposed striped inductor exhibits reduced series resistance in the high frequency region by increasing the cross-sectional peripheral length, as with the Litz wire, and the VCO of the striped inductor simultaneously exhibits a lower phase noise than that of the conventional inductor. Striped and conventional inductors and VCOs are designed and fabricated, and their use of Kand Ka-bands is measured. Results show that the Q factor and corner frequency of the striped inductor are approximately 1.3 and 1.6 times higher, respectively, than that of the conventional inductor. Moreover, the 1-MHz-offset phase noise of the striped inductor’s VCO in the Kand Ka-bands was approximately 3.5 dB lower than that of the conventional inductor. In this study, a 65-nm standard CMOS process was used. key words: skin effect, striped inductor, Q factor, corner frequency, voltage-controlled oscillator, phase noise

A low phase noise, low dissipated power and small sized Ka-band voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), using dual cross-coupled pair configuration and capacitance-splitting technique is presented. The Ka-band VCO circuit uses 0.15 μm GaAs pHEMT technology. The VCO has low phase noise, of 116.36 dBc/Hz, at a 1 MHz offset and can be tuned from 30.5 to 31.22 GHz. The figure of merit (FOM) is -192.36...

High-Frequency Low-Noise Voltage-Controlled LC-Tank Oscillators Using a Tunable Inductor Technique

This paper describes 3-GHz and 7-GHz tunableinductance LC-tank voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) implemented in 0.18-μm CMOS technology. Unlike the traditional tuning method by a varactor, a tunable inductor is employed in the VCO by using a transformer to compensate for the energy loss. The VCO facilitates the tuning frequency and low noise of the output signals, together with a variable i...

This paper describes the design of CMOS millimeterwave voltage controlled oscillators. Varactor, transistor, and inductor designs are optimized to reduce the parasitic capacitances. An investigation of tradeoff between quality factor and tuning range for MOS varactors at 24 GHz has shown that the polysilicon gate lengths between 0.18 and 0.24 m result both good quality factor ( 12) and max min ...
